“LITTLE BLACK FLIES”

Scrappy Retro Music Video for Blues and Soul Sensation Eddie 9V

Through my good friend, I heard about 24 year-old Eddie 9v and his badass, tear it up, Stax Records-homage sound. Being a lifelong Stax and Volt Records devotee — as well as a profound Otis Redding fan myself, I asked Eddie’s manager if I could do a video for his first single. With a $1000 budget and the kindness of Damon Moon at Standard Electric Recorders in Decatur, GA — DP, Jordan Pilgrim and I put together this performance-based music video together with the two of us as the only crew.

For the look and feel of the video, I wanted to re-create that early seventies rock and soul vibe — playing with a specific color palette, some funky old-school lenses, a few stylistic shout-outs to Truffaut with a dash of GoodFellas-era Scorcese, and a healthy dose of The Rolling Stones’ Sympathy For The Devil studio sessions. I think it came together quite nicely. Check out the video and my color tests below.

And check out more of Eddie’s music on Ruf Records out of Germany.
