“THE POWER IN DATA”

UPS Digital Series about Technology, Innovation, and Big Data

UPS commissioned Chorus Films and I to concept, produce, co-write, direct, edit and finish a three-episode documentary series about UPS’s digital transformation as told through UPS team members themselves: from CTO Bala Subramanian to UPSers working on the front lines of logistics, fleet and delivery. As an unapologetic Erroll Morris devotee (he was the first filmmaker I ever met, and I’ve watched every film the man’s ever made multiple times) I jumped at the idea of paying honor to Morris’s early film about the innovation heyday of IBM and blend it with a contemporary doc style that features historic footage, custom shot b roll, and a host of other materials to bring the whole thing to life. I kept the interviews very colloquial, friendly and familiar — allowing people to be themselves and have a bit of fun while breaking expansive concepts like data security, a.i., predictive technology and the hierarchy of knowledge into metaphors and descriptions anyone can grasp.

This is just the trailer… but it’ll give you a good idea of how the series looks, feels, and shows how UPS is putting data to work for their customers and their organization. A lot of effort went into this project, but it was worth it.
